As a nurse we complete a lot of documenting on patients. We have a lot of common terminology that we use. One of the most common is WNL. It means within normal limits. I have charted this countless times on patients. “Patient is resting on stretcher breathing equal and unlabored vital signs WNL”. It was not until I was challenged on exactly WNL means that I have ever thought twice about it. What exactly does within normal limits means? Normal is an extremely broad word to use, especially in the medical field. Not a single person has ever visited an ER because they were feeling normal. Yet we do have certain parameters that if a patient falls under, we consider it to be normal. This could be hugely different things, vital signs being the most common. If your blood pressure or heart rate fall in a particular criteria, then we consider them to be normal...
My Normal...
Being who you are and doing what you do... what does within "normal-limits" mean to you?
Your normal and my normal are two totally different things. I work night shift, so it is normal for me to stay up late writing like right now when you are probably sleeping. I breastfed my son for 20 months, which seems very normal to me but has gotten me some weird looks. Within-HER normal limits for me is the perfect way to describe my life and how I mother my children, nurse my patients and be a supportive spouse; still finding time for me.
As I leave you with these thoughts, I want you to think about a couple of things...
What is within your normal limits? What does it look like? Do you celebrate yourself when you find its different from others? Are you harder on you because of it?...
Well, It is 2am and my 2-year-old is still awake, because late naps are a normal thing in my home...
Until next time...
